Florida Atlantic v Charlotte

Last summer, former 49ers head coach, Ron Sanchez resigned from his position as head coach, to return to Virginia as an assistant. Sanchez, who was going to enter the 2023-24 season on the hot seat, didn’t wait to be fired, but in the process left the Charlotte program in disarray. There is never a good time to walk out on your program, and the kids you recruited, but in today’s era, of the transfer portal, along with NIL, it put the future of the program in even further danger.

Mike Hill, who left Florida for Charlotte a few years ago, in large part to restore the basketball program, was forced into action as the athletic director, to make a hire that would keep the team, and the program intact. He turned to assistant, Aaron Fearne, who had the backing of all the players, and he tabbed him as the interim head coach. After a slow start in the non-conference season, the 49ers, now are atop the AAC standings, are a healthy 14-7 and are coming off their sellout of Halton Arena in nearly 20 seasons over the weekend.

Earlier today, Mike Hill joined the Wes & Walker Show on WFNZ, as he talked about the process of naming Fearne the interim head coach, what stands out about the coach and leader he is, why the players backed him during the process, and why this season has brought life to his vision for restoring the program.

You can listen to the Wes & Walker Show, every weekday from 12-3 PM, on Sports Radio 92.7 WFNZ, and the WFNZ app.
