Oklahoma City Thunder v Charlotte Hornets

It’s been over a week since the 2023-24 season came to an end for the Charlotte Hornets, after a 21-61 season, that went sideways after another rash of injuries made it hard for the team to compete in the Eastern Conference. The lone bright spot from the disastrous season came in the form of rookie Brandon Miller, who validated Charlotte’s decision to draft him #2 overall last summer. Miller played in 74 games as a rookie, averaging 17.3 points, on 44% shooting, and 37% from behind the three-point line. Last night, it was announced that Miller was a finalist for the Rookie of the Year award, which will ultimately end up in the hands of Victory Wembmanyama.

If you remember back to last off-season when Charlotte was debating between either Miller or Scoot Henderson, the two hosts of the Wes & Walker Show, Walker Mehl and Wes Bryant were on opposite ends of the spectrum. Mehl, wanted the Hornets to draft Henderson to pair with LaMelo in the backcourt, meanwhile, Byrant was in favor of drafting Miller, to give the team the type of wing that the NBA desires. During the season, Mehl admitted to being about Brandon Miller but wasn’t able to go as far as to say that he had the best rookie season ever by a Hornet, something that is very much on the table for discussion after he was forced into a lead role, on a losing team, that’s undergoing a makeover on and off the court.

You can listen to the Wes & Walker Show, every day from 12-3 PM, on Sports Radio 92.7 WFNZ, and the WFNZ app.
