North Alabama v Florida State

Just like that, the college regular season has come and gone, and after Championship Weekend took place over the weekend, the College Football Playoff is officially set. The Playoff committee selected Michigan, Washington, Texas, and Alabama as the four teams that will compete for the national championship, starting on New Year’s Day. In the process, the committee left out Florida State, an undefeated Power 5 conference champion, the first time an undefeated power conference champion failed to make the Playoff, making this the most unprecedented move in the history of the Playoff. This decision led to many debates on many different platforms, with every show asking the same question. Did the Playoff committee get it right?

Most Monday shows on Wes & Walker start with Panthers talk, as is the custom on Panther Mondays on WFNZ. But with the Panthers sitting at 1-11, and all the controversy coming out of the Playoff field being set, the guys decided to start off talking college football. Like everyone else, they both answered the question listed above, and to the demise of many Florida State fans, and ACC fans, they believe the committee got it right. Wes, who played football in the ACC, at Wake Forest, stated that he believes there was a bias that led to Florida State being left out. And no we aren’t talking about your typical SEC/ACC bias. Instead, Wes stated that he believed that FSU was left out, simply due to a poor offensive showing in their last two games, both without Jordan Travis under center. Had Florida State looked the part offensively, Wes believes that the Seminoles would’ve made the Playoff for the second time ever. As for Walker Mehl, not only was he on the same wavelength, he was surprised that Georgia was left out after their 29-game winning streak came to an end over the weekend.

It isn’t easy to speak so lowly of an undefeated Power 5 conference champion, but this debate comes back to the core of the committee’s job. Their job isn’t to put the four most deserving teams in the College Football Playoff. Their job isn’t to put the teams with the best resumes in the College Football Playoff. Their job is to put the four best teams in the College Football Playoff, to determine the national champion. As hard as it is to admit it, Florida State, without Jordan Travis isn’t one of the four best teams in the country, despite a 13-0 record, with a neutral site win over LSU. This is why, both Wes & Walker believe the committee got it right.

You can catch the Wes & Walker Show, every weekday from 12-3 PM, on Sports Radio 92.7 WFNZ, and the WFNZ app.
