Despite leading by as many as 15, the Charlotte Hornets couldn’t prevent a comeback effort from the Dallas Mavericks, who outlasted the visitors 124-118 in Texas Sunday.
The Hornets missed on their chance to tie the score on the game’s final possession, as Brandon Miller couldn’t get the ball inbounded before a five-second violation was called.
The Mavericks had runs of 17-7 & 14-4 to wrestle back the lead, from the Hornets, who couldn’t capitalize off a resilient performance from LaMelo Ball. The Charlotte point guard, whose shot has been inconsistent this season, came alive in the fourth quarter with five three pointers and 23 of his season-high 30 points in the final frame. Ball picked up his 10th career triple-double with a season-high 13 assists along with 10 rebounds, achieving his first triple-double with 30 points or more.
Per @stathead, LaMelo Ball’s 30-PT triple-double tonight is the 3rd overall in @hornets franchise history
Anthony Mason (31/14/11 vs. TOR on March 31, 2000)
Baron Davis (33/14/10 in NBA Playoffs at Orlando on April 27, 2002)

Still, the Mavericks gutted out the win by catching fire from three themselves, with Charlotte native Grant Williams hitting all three of his three-point attempts, and Luka Doncic bullied his way to 23 points, with 15 coming in the second half. Dallas also did their damage at the free-throw line, converting 22-of-30 from the charity stripe.
The loss for the Hornets snapped a three-game Hornets conclude their road trip at 1-2, and fall to 2-4 on the season. They return home to face the Washington Wizards Wednesday, with coverage on Sports Radio 92.7 WFNZ beginning at 6 PM with tip time at 7 PM.
