The Carolina Panthers weren’t scheduled to draft until Friday of the 2024 NFL Draft, but a run on wide receivers at the end of the first round on Thursday caused general manager Dan Morgan to get aggressive to secure the guy he and the coaching staff wanted.
That guy is South Carolina wide receiver Xavier Legette, a player that the team had been connected to more and more as the process went along, and one of the most freakish athletes in this draft. At 6-1 ¼ and 222 pounds, he ran a 4.39 40-yard dash and posted a 40″ vertical at the Combine back in February, outstanding numbers for someone of his size.
Legette had a huge senior season with the Gamecocks after a quiet first four years in Columbia. He caught 71 passes for 1,255 yards and seven touchdowns, causing his draft stock to quickly sore as the season went along. He was also a dynamic kick returner, as well, the last two years, averaging 26.4 yards on his 29 returns.
