For the second time in the three seasons, Charlotte’s Romare Bearden Park will be the host for the first College Gameday of the year. The news was officially announced earlier this afternoon that the ESPN staple will set the stage for the first weekend of college football ahead of the primetime matchup between the North Carolina Tar Heels and South Carolina Gamecocks in the Duke’s Mayo Classic in Bank of America Stadium.
This will be just the third time that College Gameday will be at a game the Tar Heels are involved in. The first came back in 1997 when the team hosted a top five matchup with Florida State, a game they lost 20-3. The second and most recent appearance for the program came back in 2010 when they faced the LSU Tigers in the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Classic in Atlanta. The Tar Heels fell in that game 30-24 despite a furious comeback attempt after trailing 30-10 entering the fourth quarter.
For South Carolina, this will be the ninth time they will be involved in a College Gameday game. This will be the first time in nine year for them with their last appearance coming back in 2014 when they were upset at home by the Missouri Tigers. The Gamecocks are 3-5 all-time in games that the show has been at.
Romare Bearden Park played host to College Gameday prior to the 2021 Duke’s Mayo Classic between the No. 3 Clemson Tigers and No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs and the 2017 ACC Championship Game between Clemson and the Miami Hurricanes.
