The 2023 college football season is in full swing, with Week 2 underway. When you look back at Week 1, one of the more impressive results, was North Carolina routing South Carolina 31-17, in the Duke’s Mayo Classic. Drake Maye, who is considered a consensus top-5 pick in next year’s draft, and a potential Heisman Trophy candidate, played well, throwing for two touchdowns.

Earlier today on the Wes & Walker Show, Marquise Williams, a former standout QB at UNC in his own right, joined the show to talk about many different Tar Heel topics, including the aforementioned Drake Maye. Williams made reference to a conversation he had with former Tar Heel QB, and current starter for the Washington Commanders in the NFL, about Maye, saying that they all saw the potential for Maye to develop into what he’s become as a player. What makes the situation unique, when you look at Williams, Howell, and now Maye, is that they all made their way to Chapel Hill, from the greater Charlotte area. Williams was a standout at Mallard Creek, Howell did so at Sun Valley, and Maye ay Myers Park. The fact that this trio of QBs, all have come from within the Tar Heel State, isn’t lost on Williams, who told Wes and Walker “It’s exciting to see three guys from the 704, just doing what we do at the University of North Carolina, and that should be something that a lot of kids from that way should start understand. You don’t have to go to the Alabamas, and the Michigans or anywhere.”

When you look at the area of Charlotte recruiting, and the overall state of North Carolina, you see many premier programs recruiting the top talent, like Alabama, Clemson, and Georgia, even schools from the Big 10 like Michigan and Ohio State pop up. While that speaks to the level of talent that exists, in what is considered a basketball state, it is hard to see all of that talent, not stay home and play for the flagship university, like UNC happens to be. With Howell already a starter in the NFL, and Drake Maye soon to follow, maybe it’ll make it easier for the next group of highly touted prospects, to stay close to home, and realize they can achieve all of their hopes and dreams locally, instead of leaving their home state.

You can catch the Wes & Walker Show, every weekday from 12-3 PM on Sports Radio 92.7 WFNZ, or the WFNZ app.
