No real surprise with the top pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

The Jacksonville Jaguars selected Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence with the first overall selection on Thursday night.

Lawrence was one of the few prospects invited to be on hand in Cleveland to greet NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. He declined to stay at home and celebrate with his family. Jacksonville ushers in a new era under coach Urban Meyer, nabbing the pro-style passer as the new face of the franchise.

The Clemson star heads south to take the reins of a franchise that has struggled since its inception into the league 25 years ago. He’ll join a talented team built to thrive on offense with DJ Chalk Jr., Marvin Jones Jr. and Laviska Shenault Jr. as targets. Lawrence will also have 1,000-yard back James Robinson and former Ohio State standout Carlos Hyde as a one-two punch out of the backfield.

Jacksonville also added Clemson running back phenom Travis Etienne with the No. 25 pick.

Lawrence won’t find himself too far from home. The native of Cartersville, Georgia is a six-hour drive away from his old stomping grounds to begin his NFL career with the league’s worst team in 2020.

Lawrence brings a resume that features him as last year’s Heisman runner-up, along with leading Clemson to three consecutive College Football Playoff appearances and a National Championship Game MVP in 2019. He ended his time with the Tigers throwing for 10,098 yards with 108 total TD’s (90 passing, 18 rushing) and 17 INT’s before opting out of his senior year.

The only two games Lawrence missed in his collegiate career was due to contracting COVID-19 this past season. Clemson’s 47-40 double-overtime loss to Notre Dame on Nov. 7 came with him on the sidelines.

The sky’s the limit for one of the most celebrated QB’s in recent memory. Not overly massive expectations set by Jaguars fans, but this is the first No. 1 overall pick for the franchise. We’ll see how long it takes for Lawrence to settle into the role of the next NFL star for years to come.
