Trevor Lawrence appears to be heading south to Jacksonville.
Jaguars coach Urban Meyer told NBCSports.com he favors taking the former Clemson star with the top overall pick in next month’s 2021 NFL Draft.
“I’d have to say that’s the direction we’re going,” Meyer told Peter King. “I’ll leave that up to the owner when we make that decision official. But I’m certainly not stepping out of line that that’s certainly the direction we’re headed.”
Jacksonville’s struggles for finding a franchise quarterback goes back decades. Lawrence could be the man to fill that gap, if Meyer stays true to his word.
The team gave Gardner Minshew a shot at being a starter, but he struggled after receiving Rookie of the Year consideration two years ago. Rookie Jake Luton took over after Minshew exited with a thumb injury and was eventually replaced by veteran Mike Glennon.
Lawrence ended his college career throwing for 10,098 yards with 108 total TD’s (90 passing, 18 rushing) and 17 INT’s in three seasons. The only two games he missed in his career was due to contracting COVID-19 this past season. Clemson’s 47-40 double-overtime loss to Notre Dame came while he was on the sideline.
This is the first No. 1 overall pick for the Jaguars franchise after having eight picks in the top five since 1995. Lawrence is likely to be the fourth QB taken by Jacksonville in the first round since 2003.
