Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence will forgo his senior season and enter the NFL Draft, per an announcement on Twitter.
Lawrence, who finished as a runner-up in the Heisman Trophy voting to Alabama’s Devonta Smith on Tuesday night, made it official as the presumptive top overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft.
“Looking back on it I hope my legacy at Clemson is that I was a great teammate and a great person overall,” Lawrence said in a video posted to Twitter.
“More than football, more than how I played each game is just how I treated people. I want that to be the main thing that I’m known for and I think over the last three years that’s the thing I’ve kept as a priority.”
One of the best passers in college football, Lawrence led Clemson to a 38-2 record as a starter since 2018. The two losses came in the College Football Playoff— the first in last year’s National Championship vs. LSU and last a week ago vs. Ohio State in the Playoff semifinal Sugar Bowl.
Clemson was undefeated at 14-0 in 2019 before losing to LSU in the National Championship game. Lawrence was a perfect 29-0 prior to the loss including a 44-16 dismantling of top ranked Alabama in the 2018 National Championship.
Lawrence ends his time with the Tigers throwing for 10,098 yards with 108 total TD’s (90 passing, 18 rushing) and 17 INT’s in three seasons. The only two games he missed in his career was due to contracting COVID-19 this season. Clemson’s 47-40 double-overtime loss to Notre Dame came while he was on the sideline.
He finished the shortened 2020 season throwing for 3,153 yards and 24 touchdowns.
The Jacksonville Jaguars (1-15) hold the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft ahead of the New York Jets (2-14) at No. 2 and the Miami Dolphins (10-6) at No. 3. The first round of the Draft is scheduled on April 29 from Cleveland, Ohio.
